”It is absolutely impossible...” - Toni Greblă on the recount of the presidential elections

The President of the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) has reacted strongly to the decision of the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) to request a recount of the votes from the first round of the presidential elections of November 24, 2024.

According to him, the process of recounting the approximately 9 million ballots cannot be carried out within the deadline set by the CCR, namely by November 29, 14:00.

”It is absolutely impossible for such an operation to be carried out in one night or in a day or two. We are talking about the verification of 9 million ballot papers stored in 41 counties, in the storage facilities of the courts, and this process would take much longer than the period set by the CCR”, AEP president told Digi24.

He emphasized that so far there have been no complaints or clear evidence of any error in vote counting. ”Until the minutes from the county and central electoral offices were validated, there have been no objections to the correctness of the vote count. If there was evidence that the process was not carried out correctly, then we could talk about a recheck, but so far there is no such information”, he added.

As for the start of the campaign for the second round of the presidential elections, the AEP president said that it can only start after the CCR officially validates the results of the first round and determines the candidates who will participate in the second round.

”The campaign can start only after the CCR validates the results and officially determines which candidates will enter the 2nd round. Until then, it is impossible to campaign”, the AEP president added.

He ruled out any possibility that vote recounts could be carried out quickly through an emergency procedure.

”If there is someone who can snap his fingers and recount 9 million ballots that are in 42 warehouses in every county of the country... I don't think anyone imagines that this can be done overnight”, the AEP president concluded.
